Early Hans Wegner for Johannes Hansen 'The Chair' in Teak and Leather - SOLD

September 17, 2018

We are excited to offer an early Hans Wegner JH-503 chair designed in 1949 and produced by Johannes Hansen. Popularly known as “The Chair”, “Round Chair”, and the “Kennedy Chair”, this is arguably Wegner’s most famous design. To see it in person is to appreciate the refined details and subtle perfection of this piece of furniture. It perfectly represents Wegner’s design philosophy of "continuous purification...to cut down to the simplest possible elements of four legs, a seat, and a combined top rail and armrest." The construction features 11 pieces of wood joined by 12 mortise and tenons and two large finger joints. The finger joints orient the wood grain as the back rail wraps around the body to maximize material strength. The Chair rose to prominence in the 1960 televised debate between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy. Both presidential candidates sat in The Chair during the debate.

Solid old growth teak construction with new top-grain black leather upholstery. Stamped with the maker's mark. In very good vintage condition with some minor marks and wear as shown. Some of the finger joint points are filled, likely original to production.

24.75” w x 20.75” d x 29.375” h
Seat height 17.5”

Hans J. Wegner AP62/3 Leather & Rosewood Sofa - SOLD

June 11, 2018

A simply gorgeous rosewood and leather sofa by Danish master Hans J. Wegner for AP Stolen. Wegner's designs for AP Stolen, including his iconic Papa Bear chair, are some of his finest. This design, has recently been re-issued by Carl Hansen & Søn as the CH163, and for good reason. It is a stunningly elegant, understated but richly detailed design. From the solid rosewood frame to the beautifully worn-in original buffalo leather cushions, this sofa is a head-turner.

We love the circular detail inset into the front of the rosewood arms. Wegner created this solution to hide the fasteners that hold the arm upholstery in place. As with all of Wegner's designs, this sofa looks amazing from all angles and would suit virtually all modern living environments.

The legs and external frame elements are all solid Brazilian rosewood.Solid beech sub-frame with steel bracing and recently replaced webbing supports below quilted deck. This piece is in excellent vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. To note: some tiny paint flecks on the top of the back frame and top of one back cushion. Scuffed area on the back as shown. Otherwise: minor (attractive) wear to the leather. Please see photos.

With cushions: 31.25" deep, 29.5" h
