A gorgeous and tactile example of the early work of the master of seating design, Hans J. Wegner for C.M. Madsens. This is Wegner’s ‘W2’ model in teak. The chair was offered with a variety of seat coverings: our favorite by far is this version, in natural cane.
The sculpted solid teak backrest design was developed as part of Hans Wegner’s family of ground-breaking seating designs of the 1950s including his famous “round chair”, “cow-horn chair”, and “heart chair”.
The inclination, placement, shape, and body contact of the backrest are the result of constant research and experimentation during Wegner's early years of design. He always prioritized strength and comfort in his chairs while at the same time maintaining a sense of proportion and elegant detail that make these chairs true works of art.
This set is in excellent vintage condition. We have had them professionally re-caned by a craftsperson who cares deeply about replicating the original design and using the original, authentic materials. The natural cane seats will mellow and darken over time, celebrating the natural beauty of the material as Wegner intended.
The set displays minot signs of age-appropriate wear. There are a few light scratches and blemishes. There is a very old, stable, hairline crack in one backrest. There are some (original) filled knot holes in the structural members under the seat.
