John Stuart Desk by Mt. Airy - SOLD

July 1, 2017

This is a wonderfully designed, very high quality mid-century desk from the 'Contempora' collection by Mt. Airy Furniture in North Carolina. This piece -part of a bedroom set from which we have several pieces-  was retailed by John Stuart, a high-end furniture importer who specialized in Danish and American designer pieces. This set is often attributed to the great Danish designer, Finn Juhl, but we believe it was simply influenced by his designs.

This desk has great details, like the joinery and position of the drawer cabinet and the elegantly tapered solid walnut legs. It is fully finished on all sides, so it can be placed anywhere in the room. There is a book/display cubby on the back. In bleached walnut with fabulous solid brass pulls (please note: the pulls are currently being polished. In these photos they are tarnished.) These pieces are very heavy, as they are made primarily of walnut. There is a lot of solid walnut, and, according to the original tag, even the plywood beneath the veneered areas is made primarily of walnut!

Chair not included but available separately.
Matching headboard and nightstands available.

In used vintage condition with noticeable wear and tear: veneer chips on the desk top and corner of drawer case, scuffs on the legs and light scratches on the top. Price reflects condition.

Very Early Danish Teak Secretary Cabinet, Søborg - SOLD

February 4, 2017

This is an outstanding piece of furniture, handmade in Denmark most likely in the late 1940s or early 1950s. Notice the hand-cut dovetail joinery! This piece shares design and structural details with the line of cabinetry shown in the 1952 Søborg catalog, designed by Børge Mogensen, but we have not made a positive attribution. The build quality is exceptionally high.

The middle "drawer" is actually a desk: after being pulled out, the front flips down utilizing ingenious solid brass hardware. Inside, two sections for letter storage feature shelves slanting down towards the back. The upper two cabinet drawers reveal 4 height-adjustable drawers and 2 adjustable shelves, all in gorgeous contrasting birch. Below are 4 more adjustable shelves.

This piece is in very good condition overall, especially given it's age. Aside from minor scratches and dings, we note the following: very top has a couple of light stains and dents; top right corner has a dent in the case; right side has a couple of dents and small chops at the back and bottom corners; bottom left door has a repair to right edge. Also, the lower left back panel has two holes drilled (for electrical cords) and some splintering. This won't be very visible with items stored on the shelves in front of the damaged areas, and not at all when the doors are closed.

Amazing Floating Teak Desk by Kai Kristiansen - SOLD

June 4, 2016

This is a spectacular desk designed by highly collectible Danish designer Kai Kristiansen. It is finished on both sides - with display or book cubbies on the back -  and can be used anywhere in the room. The 6 drawers feature the designer's distinctive hand-carved drawer pulls.

Produced by Feldballes Møbelfabrik; designed in 1958.

This desk is in excellent vintage condition with light signs of use. I have photographed each small blemish: top has 2 small dents, a few  scratches on the front edge. There are some scratches on the edges of the drawer cases and around the pulls. A very small chip on the corner of one drawer. Two drawer handles have small repairs. There is a small chip on the bottom of one display cube.

Arne Vodder for H. Sigh & Son Danish Teak Writing Desk - SOLD

February 19, 2016

Drawn by renowned Danish designer Arne Vodder and produced by Sigh and Son in the 1960s, this is a wonderful little writing desk. It is finished on all sides, and the case of drawers can be moved to either side. I love the brass fastener details and the gorgeous high-quality old growth teak grain.

In excellent vintage condition with some minor scratches to the top. This desk was designed as a drop-leaf expandable desk, but the leaf is not included.

Spectacular Teak & Oak Vanity / Bureau by Ørum Møbler - SOLD

February 12, 2016

This is such a stunning piece of Danish design. Crafted in the 1950s or early 1960s by Ørum Møbler -who produced many of famed designer Erik Buck's pieces- this gorgeous vanity is clearly influenced by Finn Juhl / Niels Vodder's sculptural external legs.

Check out the way the cabinetmaker has carefully matched the grain all the way up the drawers, on the horizontal surface, and up the drop-down desk front. Beautiful! The external carved and turned oak legs are a very elegant and distinctive feature, along with the hand-carved drawer pulls.

On the top is a bookshelf or display area. Inside the drop-down desk are small drawers and a cabinet door which opens to reveal another small drawer. Below are three spacious drawers. Although originally intended as a vanity (there was orginally a mirror on the back of the door inside) it would be a wonderful piece for the entryway, living room, bedroom or office.

It is in excellent vintage condition with age-appropriate signs of wear and use. There are some old, well-blended repairs along the bottom edges of the case. The middle drawer has a slight veneer separation inside the drawer. The inner door has small veneer chips on the bottom edge, and the very top bookshelf area has a couple of light rings. All in all it presents very well and is a gorgeous piece!
