Joonas Black & White - 2 available
Always inspired by her surroundings, in 1961 Marimekko designer Maija Isola created the black and white Joonas pattern after a visit to the Mediterranean Sea. Awestruck by the shapes the sun made as it reflected off of the warm salt water, Isola created a pattern that was meant to be enjoyed on a massive scale. A departure from the highly detailed, intricate and small scale work of her 1960’s Ornamentti Series, Joonas leapt into modern design with oversized imagery.
This beautiful print is a modern interpretation of the sea and was a true turning point for Maija Isola and for modern design.
Vuorilaakso Grey - SOLD
Sanna Annukka's Vuorilaakso (Mountain Valley) pattern feels folkloric, with crisp linework decorating the rolling hills and mounds.
Kivet Grey - 1 available
Maija Isola created the Kivet fabric in 1956 by cutting out rounds of colored paper with scissors. The print´s shapes likely originate from the large, rough-edged stones cleared from the site of the artist´s studio home.
Rautasänky - 1 available
Rautasänky by Maija Isola for Marimekko, Finland 1961
Silkkikuikka - 2 available
Always inspired by the beauty of nature, Marimekko’s Silkkikuikka Fabric is one of Maija Isola’s more abstract prints. Reminiscent of a tribal drawing, the earthy pattern of Silkkikuikka was inspired by the movements of a particular bird. Finnish for “great crested grebe”, Isola uses repeating wave-like lines to suggest themes of water, plumage and flight. This pattern has different sections and creates different patterned pillows, each is unique.
