Fine Danish Teak Convertible Couch / Sleeper Sofa - SOLD

September 8, 2015

This is a very high-quality piece of vintage Danish furniture, purchased in the 1950s in New York by the original owner. A sofa or couch by day, it features a sliding mechanism to allow the seat to be pulled out, offering a wider "bed" for sleeping.

Marked "Made in Denmark" and with the Danish Furniture Makers' Control stamp (an assurance of high quality.) There is also a stamp that seems to indicate it was made in 1955. This is clearly a carefully designed piece -notice the tapered legs and interesting aluminum bracket details.

This beautiful and functional piece is in excellent vintage condition with wear consistent with age and light use. The lovely wool upholstery has no rips or tears. There is some light pilling on the seat that could probably be shaved off easily. The foam is in great condition for its age: this sofa is totally useable as it is without the need to reupholster.

78" wide x 30.5" deep x 28.5" high.
Seat height 14".  Arm height 20".
Bed, when pulled out, measures 71.5" x 27"
This sofa could be dismantled for shipping if needed.

Pair of Authentic Diamond Chairs by Harry Bertoia for Knoll - SOLD

September 7, 2015

With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art when Bertoia met Florence Knoll (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda, and the result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). Featuring a delicate filigreed appearance that’s supremely strong, these airy seats are sculpted out of steel rods. In his art, Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work, and these chairs were an extension of that work. “If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture,” said Bertoia. “Space passes through them.” After designing his seating collection, Bertoia returned to focusing mostly on sculpture. These are authentic Bertoia Diamond Chairs produced by Knoll.

The original orange seat pads are in decent shape with a few cracks, pinholes at the edges (I suspect a cat!) and one small hole. The fabric on the back of one chair also has some pulls, probably from that same cat! The frames are very good: strong and sturdy with no broken welds or repairs. There is some light rust, as is expected in chairs this age, but they present very well. 33" wide x 28.25" deep x 29.75" high.

Pair of Fantastic Milo Baughman Lounge Chairs / Club Chairs - SOLD

September 7, 2015

Sexy, comfortable 1960s arm chairs by acclaimed mid-century designer Milo Baughman. Crafted by Thayer Coggin's company James, Inc. in High Point, North Carolina. These jaunty chairs are a fine example of Milo Baughman's early work.

These chairs were purchased by the sole owner (before us) in New York City where he was in advertising - a real life Mad Man! His home was filled with extremely stylish and high-quality designer furniture from the 1950s and 1960s. (See our other listings for more!)

The fabulous teal woven upholstery is in good vintage condition. There is some wear consistent with age and use, primarily at the front corners of the arms, which could probably be ameliorated by some judicious stitching with matching thread. The walnut frames are sturdy, with some veneer loss around the base.

1960s "Mad Men" Arm Chair - SOLD

September 7, 2015

This bittersweet-chocolate-colored club chair was in excellent condition until last night, when my VERY naughty cat scratched the arm. Grrr.

This chair came from the home of a gentleman who'd been an advertising man in New York in the 1960s (a real life "Mad Man"!) and furnished his home there. It was in the company of Milo Baughman, Eames, and Kipp Stewart furnishings. This chair is marked "Montclair Funiture Company."

Other than the small cat scratches and a bit of wear on the front corners (all of which could probably be ameliorated with some judicious stitching in brown thread) it is in excellent vintage condition. It had been well-cared for and seldom used.

A matching pair of great mid century armchairs. These classic chairs have walnut frames with brass-capped legs.
